The Peer Engagement Program was created as a way to help anxious, introverted or neurodivergent students connect to one another and have a group of individuals with whom they can attend campus events. The end goal is to increase feelings of belonging, campus event participation and attendance, and help students feel like they belong at UW-Whitewater. This grant allows us to provide compensation, training, and materials without straining an individual department’s funding. The Peer Engagement Leader will learn how neurodivergent brains function differently when faced with overstimulating or overwhelming environments and how to help deter and manage meltdowns or high emotion moments. Training will be collaboratively created by the Center of Students with Disabilities, University Health and Counseling Services, the Dean of Students, and First Year Experience. Peer Leaders will either pre-select campus events and provide dates and information ahead of time, or ask students to submit for the events they’d like the group to participate in together. This program will provide multiple avenues for students to get connected and interact with others while on campus. The Peer Engagement Program directly aligns with Chancellor Corey A. King’s mission to increase and maintain student retention on campus. The more students feel a sense of belonging and feel seen on campus, the more likely they are to remain students at UW-Whitewater until they graduate.

Phi Eta Sigma was founded on March 22, 1923, to encourage and reward high scholastic achievement among members of the freshman classes at the University of Illinois. In 1940, Phi Eta Sigma established its Founders Fund to award scholarships to students at the national level. Since that first award of $300, Phi Eta Sigma has awarded more than $6.6 million in scholarships to students pursuing undergraduate and graduate education.
