Volunteers will cut and/or pull invasive plants found throughout the UWW Nature Preserve. The plants targeted vary seasonally, but are typically herbaceous plants in spring and summer and woody plants in fall and winter. All plant identification and removal techniques will be provided by Sustainability Office staff. Participants are encouraged to wear clothing that covers their skin and sturdy shoes or boots for walking over uneven terrain. Volunteers will be working with cutting tools, including small chainsaws, and herbicide for these sessions and must adhere to all safety instructions provided by Sustainability Office staff. All volunteer sessions meet at the LAWCON Picnic Shelter unless otherwise communicated.
This is a great group activity for student organizations! To make an appointment for groups of 5 or more people, please email us with your affiliation, group size, along with times and dates that work best for you.
The restoration work in the UW-Whitewater Nature Preserve helps to maintain a diverse array of ecosystem types by establishing and protecting native plant species and communities. We engage in various management activities in the Nature Preserve throughout the year. Collecting prairie seeds helps establish or bolster existing prairie areas in the Nature Preserve, or is used to establish native plantings across the campus landscape or donated/traded with local entities to provide a more diverse seed bank using local genotypes. Volunteers will be assigned specific plants to find and collect seeds. Prairie seed collection starts in September and concludes in mid-November.
Note if you are unable to help for a whole session you are still welcome to join! We just ask that you still register so we know how many to prepare for. Thank you!
